This year, the topic of the annual symposium of the Novartis Foundation for Sustainable Development is: “New media: drivers of democratization and development?” The morning session will focus on new media as a tool of democratization. Speakers will discuss the role of Facebook and other social media platforms in the Arab revolutions and analyze the impact of mobile phone penetration into the African continent.
The afternoon session looks at the potential of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for development. Specifically, speakers will present key learnings on how e-health applications can improve access to quality healthcare and ultimately help contribute to the achievement of the health-related Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
“New media is fundamentally transforming the way we live. It is crucial that nobody is excluded from the new global knowledge society we are building. The increased interaction made possible through access to Information and Communication Technology has the potential to help overcome the challenges emerging in our globalized world and ultimately contribute to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals by 2015.”
