For many of Dakar’s young men, exercising on the beaches of Yoff and Corniche has become a hub for socializing. It is not unusual to see men dressed in colourful sports gear, running and doing press-ups in the sand, just seconds before jumping into the sea to cool off.
Despite this urban craze, the rate of hypertension (high blood pressure) in Dakar stands at 24.7%, with many unaware or unable to access treatment to control their condition. To empower patients to better manage their condition, Better Hearts Better Cities will bring together multidisciplinary, multisector stakeholders and partners to improve hypertension awareness, screening, diagnostics, and monitoring.
Better Hearts Better Cities is a Novartis Foundation initiative which seeks to improve cardiovascular health in low-income urban communities by adopting a multisector, multidisciplinary approach to improve the control of hypertension as a key risk factor for cardiovascular disease.
